MEISSEN® artist Horst Bretschneider raises naturalistic porcelain painting to the status of optical illusion by juggling around with levels of focus, luminous reflectance, shadow and chromatic intensity. The vines and leaves on his hand-thrown vase are so realistically moulded as to be virtually edible. Very close scrutiny is required to make out the transition from sculpted to painted decoration. The subject-matter ingeniously makes the link between porcelain art and the Baroque zest for life. The tradition of cultivating wine along the Elbe goes back more than 800 years. Quality comes before quantity in Germany's smallest wine-growing region. The makings of many a fine drop flourish on steep terraces interspersed with ancient stone walls in what is a truly idyllic riverside setting. No wonder that, as well as living out his passion for the fine arts, Augustus the Strong also had country estates and pleasure palaces built here, locations at which it is still the custom today to produce superb wines and live a life of culture. The decorative detail on the vase makes reference to regional traditions - and uses trompe-l'oeil effects to play tricks on the beholder. You see the grapes double without even drinking a drop of fine Saxon wine.
