The great enthusiasm for East Asia in Europe inspired Johann Joachim Kaendler to produce numerous Asian porcelain figures such as the Buddha from the mid-1740s. The sculpture is inspired by East Asian pagodas and features intricate details that are truly a work of art. The special feature of the figures is their mobility: hands and head can be set in motion by a slight push. The hand-painted staffage, based on an idea by Meissen's creative director Otto Drögsler, draws on motifs from various painting styles and decorations of the manufactory.
