Meissen's legendary model master Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775) created his famous "Monkey's Orchestra" in 1753, a total of 21 monkey musicians in human clothing that served as an ironic, mocking reflection of courtly society. This orchestra has always remained the most well-known of any of the numerous exquisitely conceived figure groups that were fashioned at MEISSEN. Such music-making animals adorned walls, ceilings, furniture fabrics and carpets in a host of palaces. Countless drawings document this then popular trend. Kaendler selected 21 of the waggish musicians depicted and used them as prototypes for a combo of his own in porcelain. Modeller Silke Ebermann has now herself sought inspiration from these venerable drawings in anticipation of the Manufactory's 310th anniversary in 2020. "Monkey with Zither" consummately re-enacts the unique formal idiom evolved by her great predecessor Kaendler.
