Johann Friedrich Böttger first produced what he dubbed his "fine red porcelain" in 1707. The design porcelain painter Victoria Schmidt thought up for the present Böttger bottle harks back to the Manufactory's earliest days, when the aim was to enhance the dark material with decoration suggestive of gemstones. She used floral watercolours by the Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a leading figure in the art nouveau movement that emerged in the late 19th century, as her source material.
