Limited Masterworks 2021 Vase, Gardens of Paradise

Order No.: 29B184-50401-1
41x24 cm, 4300 g
Love, grief and drama: Greek Antiquity has always held artists in thrall. Porcelain painter Elke Janke decorated her vase with a motif from the Hesperides saga and entitled it "Gardens of Paradise". It is told that these nymphs from Greek mythology had the task of watching over an orange grove and its "golden apples" - fruits with special powers that were said to give the gods eternal youth - in a garden of paradise. The symbol-laden tree adorns the reverse of the present vase as a stylised device in gilt. Seated in their shell carriage are the beautiful Hesperides, who have got together with Hercules to steal the orange tree from the garden of paradise. They are now all approaching the coast of Italy. Framing the sumptuous painted detail are a ground hand-daubed in deep-blue and an opulent band of gilding.
